My Journeys Through Ghosts Of Yards Past

7-1-2007-096

Over the years during my continuous chase to catch a game or two at every MLB yard I’ve witnessed action in 25 yards with 18 of them current. 6 of the 7 non current on my list have gone way via the wrecking ball. While they may not be left standing some have left reminders of their once presence. Though i’ve yet to visit the remains of these yards, there are 5 other ghosts of yards past that i’ve been able to journey through from one coast to the other.

Atlanta-Number 715 7-1-2007-094

Prior to catching a Braves game at Turner Field in 2007 I would venture through the parking lot across the street where the field from the Braves first Atlanta home is outlined. Fulton County Stadium would serve as the home of the Braves from 1966-1996. The warning track, infield and pitchers mound are all highlighted by bricks. It was here where Hank Aaron would hit his historic 715th home run.

Further out in the lot is a marker commemorating the landing spot of number 715. 7-1-2007-096Though the Braves no longer call Turner Field their home the lot remains in use for Georgia State Football. There has even been some talk about using the footprint from the baseball outline for a future stadium for the school.Hank Aaron_Before and After

New York-Behind The Bag 20190911_181400

From 1964-2008 the New York Mets would call Shea Stadium their home. During that time they would capture 2 World Series Championships. The 1969 championship team would forever be remembered as The Miracle Mets while the 1986 team will forever be linked to a ground ball that went through Bill Buckner’s legs.

The location of the bases and pitching rubber are marked in the parking lot outside Citi Field. When going to a Mets game you’ll want to arrive early enough before the lot fills up to allow yourself enough time to explore. As I arrived prior to the game on 9/11/2019 a father was pitching to his son as he hit soft comebackers back to his dad while other fans we’re also snapping shots of the surrounding bases. 20190911_175909

From this Dodger fan’s POV, 2 of the greatest moments prior to the 1988 World Series occurred here in Game 4 of the 1988 NLCS thanks to Mike Scioscia in the top of the 9th…

And Kirk Gibson in the top of the 12th…

I wonder if Gibby would ever hit a homer bigger than that…

Pittsburgh- Maz’s Wall20210609_162317 From 1909 to June 1970 the Pittsburgh Pirates would play their home games at Forbes Field. Remnants of Forbes Field reside as part of the University of Pittsburgh campus. One of the games most exciting players would roam the outfield here for 15 of his 18 years as a Buc. In addition to thrilling Bucs fans with his outfield prowess, Roberto Clemente would also win 4 National League batting titles. A street that runs through parts of Forbes old outfield is named after the 12 time all-star.

On October 13, 1960 Forbes Field would be witness to one of the most exciting finishes in World Series history. With the series tied at 3 against the heavily favored Yankees and the score tied at 9 in the home 9th of the 7th and deciding game, Pirates shortstop Bill Mazeroski would send the Steel City fans delirium…

A plaque commemorating Mazeroski’s WS walk-off is located atop the brick outlined sidewalk leading to parts of the outfield wall that remains standing. Locals like to refer to it as Maz’s Wall. 20210609_162405

Every year on October 13 fans gather in front of Maz’s wall to celebrate the anniversary and listen to the radio call of Maz’s World Series winning homer.

As my buddy Marlon and I we’re walking around the area we we’re approached 3 times by locals asking if we we’re ballpark travelers. Did our Dodgers apparel give it away?

Should you make the trek to PNC Park you’ll want to check out the statues of both Roberto Cleente and Bill Mazeroski. Next to Maz’s statue is another section of the old Forbes Field wall…

Minnesota-520 Feet From Home Plate To The Red Seat From 1961-1981 the Minnesota Twins played their home games at Metropolitan Stadium in the Minneapolis suburb of Bloomington. The Mall of America now occupies the spot where old Metropolitan Stadium once stood but visitors can still see a couple reminders of it’s past. One of two reminders of The Met’s past is a home plate plaque it’s original location. Tony Oliva, Rod Carew and Harmon Killebrew among other Twins stars stepped up to the plate to display their offensive talents.

The Met would host one World Series during it’s run and it was here in Game 7 of the 1965 World Series where 60 feet 6 inches from home plate Sandy Koufax would pitch a masterful 2-0 shutout on 2 days rest, giving the Los Angeles Dodgers their 3rd World Title in L.A. in only their 8th season since their move from Brooklyn. (Yes, this is another biased great Dodgers moment ! LOL)

OK. So i’m not quite 60 feet 6 inches from home plate…

Harmon Killebrew would smash The Met’s longest home run at 520 feet. As we navigate our way through Nickelodeon themed attractions we find one of the original chairs from The Met mounted on the wall above the log chute ride at the exact spot Killebrew’s blast landed.

During the same period the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings would also call The Met their home. A plaque marking the spot of the 50 yard line can also be found. 20220928_161629

After completing our search of ghosts of The Met’s past we took the light rail from the Twins old home to their current digs, Target Field, paying Mary Tyler Moore a visit along the way.

San Diego- Lane Field Park 20200924_181822 Prior to the San Diego Padres MLB affiliation in 1969 the Friars would be a part of the Pacific Coast League. From 1936-1957 the Padres would play their home games at Lane Field along the San Diego Harbor.

San Diego native Ted Williams would play for the PCL Padres from 1936-37. A marker would be placed on the location of home plate in 2003 and in 2015 Lane Field Park would be dedicated along with a batters box and a flat surfaced pitchers mound with lighting complimenting the pitchers rubber.

When passing through America’s Finest City, Lane Field Park is just a short 20 minute walk from Petco Park

What ghost from yards past will Drei encounter next on his Journey to 30?
